Our Mummers’ Play

The World Premiere of the Boscastle Border Morris Mummers’ Play was performed in the outside space at the Cobweb – it would have been outside the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic but the weather was just too awful!

Written especially for us by our Foreman, Lara, and costumed by our Wardrobe Wizard, Amanda, this is a short traditionally styled Mummers’ Play with a Boscastle-based story. Attacked by the Sea Bucca (boo!) the village is defended by King Arthur (hoorah!) who finds himself defeated (boo!) – however, Joan Wytte (hoorah!) brings him back to life. Then Joan, helped by the Boscastle witches (representing the Nap, Cobweb and Welly), raises the wind to send the Sea Bucca back where it came from. Hoorah Indeed!

We cast the play differently for each performance – the scripts are taken by members of the side at random who then don the appropriate costume and perform the part.

A further indoor performance at the Wellington was well received by an appreciative, if somewhat surprised, audience!
